Was Christ Rude to Mary?
Q: Why does Christ refer to his mother Mary as “Woman” at the wedding of Cana, and at His crucifixion when He gives her to John? JD
A: Well spotted! It’s highly significant, and the answer touches the heart of the Gospel. Here’s the scriptures you cite, Jn. 2:3-4, 19:26-27 KJV;
And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
Woman: Not Mother
Notice the written word of God designates Mary as His mother, yet Jesus referred to her as woman; which can sound disrespectful, or even rude, to our ears.
Do you think she enjoyed it? No, she endured many sleepless nights contemplating the words of Jesus of Nazareth.
Halleluia when that happens to anyone!
Why Woman?
There are two plain reasons;
Firstly, Mary was the mother of the baby that God formed in her womb by a miracle. The LORD inhabited that baby to manifest Almighty God in Human Flesh: The One and Only Incarnation.
Now grasp this vital Bible fact; Mary was the mother of a baby, not the Mother of God (as papists blasphemously teach), because God has no Mother.
God IS, and always has been.
So, naturally Jesus addressed her as ‘Woman’, not ‘Mother’.
Simple isn’t it?
I’m certain, in like manner, He addressed Joseph as ‘Man’, and not ‘Father’, because Christ never contradicted God’s word, Mtt. 23:9 KJV;
And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
Perhaps this contributed to the early demise of Joseph, after all, he had a stressful, unique, and tough row to hoe, didn’t he?
Joseph knew he didn’t father Jesus.
Secondly, despite the unquestioned physical relationship of being born of woman, Christ had no spiritual relationship with Mary at this time. She wasn’t born again until after Christ resurrected. It was impossible before then.
In addition, Mary frequently exhibited common unbelief in Christ, wobbling like we did until we were born of God.
For example; she took His brothers to interrupt and prevent Jesus from preaching the Gospel.
His own family tried to shut the Messiah up.
I’m sure, like all Jewish mums, she’d chided that if He wasn’t careful what He said, He’d soon be in hot-water with the Jewish religious crowd; and she was right about that! I’m relieved Christ obeyed His Father, and not His flesh Mother, aren’t you? Mark 3:31-35 KJV;
There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him.
And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee.
And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren?
And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!
For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.
This gentle public rebuke is repeated in Lk 8:20-21 KJV;
And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.
And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.
Ye Must Be Born Again!
The Gospel point is crystal clear: If you want a genuine relationship with God, you must be living in spiritual unity with Him through receiving Christ as LORD and Saviour.
When you know Him, you’ll delight to hear and do whatever He says.
Mary was rebuked publicly by Christ for not heeding that simple Gospel truth.
Let’s learn from her error. Make certain you have been truly born again.
Whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.
Understanding Roman Catholicism: Discover why Catholics are not Christian.
Mary’s soul (her mind will and emotions) was “pierced” when she saw her Son crucified, and His Sacrifice brought conviction of sin to the world, exposing our wicked hearts and need for His salvation.
Testimonies of ex-Catholic priests: 50 testimonies of priests and nuns who renounced Catholicism to become real Christians. Compiled by an Irish former Priest, Richard Bennett.
Mary was a sinner, just like all of us, only after she was born again was she made righteous, like every truly born again believer in Christ. The Roman Catholic doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary is a satanic, blasphemous, invention.
