Why Mercy is Eternal
To hammer home the basic bible truth that our Creator’s mercy endures for ever, He repeats it 26 times in Psalm 136 alone, Ps. 136:1-26 KJV;
O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever.
O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him that by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him that stretched out the earth above the waters: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever:
The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever:
The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him that smote Egypt in their firstborn: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And brought out Israel from among them: for his mercy endureth for ever:
With a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him which divided the Red sea into parts: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And made Israel to pass through the midst of it: for his mercy endureth for ever:
But overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red sea: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him which led his people through the wilderness: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him which smote great kings: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And slew famous kings: for his mercy endureth for ever:
Sihon king of the Amorites: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And Og the king of Bashan: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And gave their land for an heritage: for his mercy endureth for ever:
Even an heritage unto Israel his servant: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And hath redeemed us from our enemies: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Who giveth food to all flesh: for his mercy endureth for ever.
O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Mercy is a prime characteristic of God’s nature.
It amazes His children that God’s love and mercy are renewed daily, limitless, and eternally perfect. Lamentations 3:22-23 KJV;
It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
From Divine to Rudimentary
We wonder, “How can this be?” because human mercy is so conditional and vastly inferior to the LORD’s.
The vestigial mercy that people retain is preserved by God so that even in our fallen state we can raise offspring, patiently correct the errant, and reflect godliness to a tiny degree.
Divine mercy is infinitely greater than humans have ever displayed, no wonder it mystifies even the saints of God.
We Each Need Constant Mercy
He’s omniscient, yet merciful even to those who ought never to fail Him, but often do.
No wonder we worship Him alone.
Mercy and Love
His mercy is eternal, like His love.
God doesn’t have a reservoir of love: He IS Love.
Love is a primary feature of His nature, along with His faithfulness, justice, truthfulness, wisdom, and integrity.
You could say the same about any of the divine features of His character.
Limitless But Conditional
Likewise, God doesn’t have a limit to His mercy: He IS full of mercy.
But that mercy is only for those who believe in His Living WORD : The LORD Jesus Christ and are truly born of God. Jn. 3:18-19 KJV;
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
His mercy doesn’t end when sinners reject the terms of His Blood Covenant, it is His justice and integrity that ultimately judges and condemns them to Hell.
God does not have a portion, or measure, of truth: He IS Truth, The Absolute Truth, Jn. 14:6-11 KJV;
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.
God doesn’t vary in His justice: He IS Just, and so cannot be unjust. Jn. 5:22-23, 30 KJV;
For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
God does not need any effort to keep His integrity: He is integrity because He IS what He IS. Jehovah. Almighty God, Exodus 3:14 KJV;
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
And God Said… And It Was So
God does not have to strain to believe and have faith in His Word or words: He IS Divine faith, the other side of divine love.
God does not have to get wisdom: He IS wisdom. Perfectly exemplified in the God-Man: The LORD Jesus Christ.
All of Almighty God that it is possible to squeeze into the human form, was present in Christ on Earth: All the fulness of the Godhead.
Contemplate that bible fact, Colossians 2:9 KJV;
For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
When three disciples caught a glimpse of what He was like when glorified a tad more, they couldn’t stand it and fell to the ground unable to take in the sight.
Praying With Wigglesworth
Smith Wigglesworth lived in God’s Presence so intimately that Father knew He could rely on Smith to walk in faith and do His bidding, and astounding miracles flowed from the Bradford Plumber all his Christian life.
A group of Christians hungry for more of God in their lives asked Wigglesworth if they could pray and worship with him.
Smith obliged, and one by one the believers fled from the room as the Presence of God overwhelmed them, eventually leaving Smith alone in the room.
Imagine that if you can.
And if you can’t, Father understands, and invites us to share such close fellowship with Him, all the time.
Smith was not God’s favourite: He has none.
We are welcome to lie on Christ’s Breast and listen to God’s heart beat.
A lady once chided God in prayer because, “You treated John with special favour, allowing him to lie on His chest at last supper.”
She was shocked to hear Christ respond, “But they all could have lay on me, only John wanted to.”
As George Stormont, a close friend of SW, related the episode, “Let it not be said among us that only Wigglesworth wanted to be so close to Him.”
Perhaps you have not yet come to know God’s mercy, and would like to experience the compassion of Christ, and respond to His Good News.
What Good News?
The good news that even while we were yet sinners, God came in Christ, and died for our sins, bore the guilt of us all, and went to Hell in our place.
Why?
Because God had said the one who sins must die, and be banished forever from His Presence.
So what?
So by taking our place, enduring the punishment we deserve, Our Creator can legally acquit us from every accusation, providing we repent from unbelief, and believe on Christ The LORD.
The good news that Christ rose from His tomb on the third day, just as He promised, and Holy Scripture foretold.
Why?
To prove that He is Almighty God in The Flesh, that He had no sin of His own, therefore all our sin has been dealt with once and for all.
So what?
So turn from religion, repent of your sin, and trust that The LORD Jesus Christ has paid for your guilt before Father God.
The good news that The Holy One thought you were good enough for Him to lay down His sinless life to bring you back into God’s ever-loving arms forever.
Why?
Because He created you, you are His idea, God loves you with the perfect love He designed you for, and wants the very best for you; God’s Peace, God’s Love, Righteousness and Eternal life.
So what?
So turn to God and thank Him that He thinks you are worth the life of His Only Begotten Son, and Receive Christ as your LORD and Saviour with all your heart.
