Q: This may sound odd, but could I have been born again as a child without knowing it?
A: A scouser friend, backpacking in Asia, asked me once, in all seriousness, if it was possible he’d been born of God in the past without realising it? He had in mind some “religious experience” he’d had as a baby or youth, such as infant baptism and Anglican ‘confirmation’.
I replied, “Is it possible that you were married in the past without knowing it?“
That reply satisfied him, and not long after, he returned to Liverpool, attended a Full Gospel fellowship, was soon born of God, and then baptised in water.
Marriage is a Legal Contract
To get married you have to be conscious that you are making a legally binding commitment to receive a person as spouse for life. It must be properly; licensed, officiated, verified, and witnessed, in order to be a valid marriage.
You can see that if a person is, say, mentally ill, or drugged, and brought to be married, it would be obvious the person doesn’t know what they are doing, and no honourable witness could validate such a procedure.
Similarly, when a sinner decides to receive the Person of The LORD Jesus Christ as his, or her, Lord, and commits to believing and following Him for the rest of their life, they must do it; willingly, truthfully, and freely, otherwise it’s invalid, and God will not endorse it: There will be no Inner Witness of God’s Spirit to the person’s heart.
The Greatest Miracle
The instant a person is Born of God they are transformed at the deepest spiritual level, with a new kind of life empowering them: Almighty God switches them from mortal life (which is being dead in sins Eph. 2:5 KJV) to eternal divine life.
They are redeemed from Satan’s realm, and brought into the kingdom of God, with nothing left against them, all their sins are remitted, the righteousness, holiness, sanctification, and wisdom of God is imputed to them because they are raised spiritually to dwell in Christ Jesus in the heavenly realm… all this is by the power and Grace of God through the sinner’s faith in The Faith and Person of The LORD Jesus Christ.
Can that happen to somebody and they don’t know it?
No!
So the answer to your question is plain, it is impossible to be born of God without knowing it.
-
- The sinner has to know what they are doing when they devote themselves to Christ.
- Their decision must be sincere and wholehearted.
- Once born again, the new righteous saint in Christ knows it on the inside, in the core of their being, they will have The Witness of God.
- Subsequently, their lives will change outwardly, because of their commitment to follow The LORD Jesus Christ.
If someone claims to be a believer and does not walk in Christ they are counterfeits, who fool themselves, but not Father God.
God the Holy Ghost calls suchlike liars, 1 Jn. 2:3-6 KJV;
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
…and no liar has any part in God’s kingdom, Rev. 21:7-8 KJV;
He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
